Beginning at the Monte Brasil peninsula, view the volcanic formation, which is rich in natural vegetation, and continue to the Pico das Cruzinhas Viewpoint for a panoramic view over Angra do Heroísmo city. The tour continues along the island’s glorious East Coast by passing the Serretinha Viewpoint, where you’ll see the Cabral Islets. We’ll continue to Porto Judeu village to visit the brightly-colored Holy Ghost Chapel and pass through Salga Bay, the site of the infamous Battle of Salga that held off Spanish forces from a military conquest of the Azores.  You’ll see attractions including Ponta das Contendas, Mós Bay, and visit the Maria Vieira Chapel, which pays homage to the local Saint.  Then you’ll visit Praia da Vitória city, stopping at the Serra do Facho Viewpoint which offers a panoramic view over the town, followed by the Serra do Cume Viewpoint overlooking the famed “patchwork blanket” landscape created by farming fields surrounded by volcanic rocks.

Then we’ll take a break and enjoy lunch featuring local cuisine.

After lunch, we’ll visit the Algar do Carvão volcano, an ancient volcanic vent and chimney allowing a unique view of the extinct volcano. Visit Biscoitos village, crossing the central area of the island and enjoy the wide vineyard landscape known for its squared walls, surrounded by volcanic rocks. Wade in the waters of the stunning Biscoitos natural swimming pools enclosed by the sea and volcanic rock formations. Return to Angra do Heroísmo, passing through Altares, Raminho, Serreta, Doze Ribeiras, Santa Bárbara and Cinco Ribeiras villages. We will also stop at the Queijo Vaquinha Cheese Factory to taste the oldest cheese produced on the island.

Glass-bottom Boat Trip in Angra do Heroismo Bay

Afternoon pick-up at the hotel for a glass-bottom boat trip to see the ancient artifacts in Angra do Heroísmo Bay. During the Discoveries Period, many ships arrived in Angra do Heroísmo, and due to the formidable south winds, many of them ended up sinking in the bay. Learn about the island’s maritime history and get a glimpse of the sunken ship, “Lidador,” as well as the Anchors Cemetery submerged at the bottom of the bay, where today we find Angra do Heroísmo Archaeological Park.

Day 4

Complimentary breakfast available at the hotel.

A Day at the Farm

Morning pick-up at the hotel for a full-day Jeep Tour of the farming industry in the Azores. Enjoy interacting with the animals, including tasting the milk taken directly from the cow and feeding the animals in the pasture.

“Mistérios Negros” Hiking Trail

Afternoon pick-up at the hotel for a hike on the Mistérios Negros Walking Trail, situated on Serra de Santa Bárbara Nature Reserve and Terceira Island Natural Park. This circular route starts in Negro Lake with a dirt path full of vegetation and continues to the entrance of a pasture. During your walk, you’ll see several of the Azores endemic plants as well as three small lakes known as “Lagoinhas do Vale Fundo.”  Of the three lakes, only one maintains water throughout the year, becoming an important destination for some migratory birds. The route is marked by black trachytic domes with a lack of vegetation, which are a result of the volcanic eruption that took place in 1761. Ahead, at the highest point on the route, you’ll see around Pico Gordo mountain, the island’s central massif, and Pico do Gaspar.
