Whale Watching on the Azorean Sea

Morning departure from the hotel for a day of Whale Watching on the Azorean Sea with a chance to see over 25 species of whales. Whale and dolphin observation is nearly guaranteed and usually includes viewing additional sea life such as sea turtles, birds, and other marine animals. Aboard the ship, a local biologist will share insight of these many species, the importance of respect for animals, and historical facts of sights along the tour. During the journey back, we’ll visit the passage along the Monte Brasil Nature Reserve and glimpse the São João Baptista Fortification.

Angra do Heroísmo City Sightseeing Tour

In the afternoon, you’ll enjoy a panoramic bus tour, with retractable roof, showcasing the historic center of Angra do Heroísmo, UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its unique architecture, colorful houses, restaurants, shops, and cafes.

Your tour will highlight 30 points of interest and include an audio guide available in Portuguese, English, French, German, and Spanish. Attractions include: Alto das Covas, Monte Brasil península, São Gonçalo Convent, Angra do Heroísmo Cathedral, Praça Velha (Central Square), Rua Direita, Pátio da Alfândega, Misericórdia Church, São Sebastião Fortress, Bull Arena and Bull Monument, São Bento Holy Ghost Chapel, Memória Obelisk, Angra do Heroísmo Museum, and Duque de Bragança Market.

Terceira Island East Coast Tour

Afternoon hotel pick-up for a tour of the island’s glorious East Coast, beginning by passing the Serretinha Viewpoint where you’ll see the Cabral Islets. We’ll continue to Porto Judeu village to visit the brightly-colored Holy Ghost Chapel and pass through Salga Bay, the site of the infamous Battle of Salga that held off Spanish forces from a military conquest of the Azores. You’ll see attractions including Ponta das Contendas, Mós Bay, and visit the Maria Vieira Chapel, which pays homage to the local Saint.  Your journey will continue towards São Sebastião village, one of the first places on the island to be settled, where you’ll view the São Sebastião Church built in 1455 in late Gothic style. Then you’ll visit Praia da Vitória city, stopping at the Serra do Facho Viewpoint, which offers a panoramic view over the town, followed by the Serra do Cume Viewpoint overlooking the famed “patchwork blanket” landscape created by farming fields surrounded by volcanic rocks.

Terceira Island West Coast Tour

Afternoon hotel pick-up for a tour of the island’s beautiful West Coast, passing through São Mateus da Calheta village to explore the Whaling Museum and Fishing Port. We’ll continue through Negrito Bay, which used to be a whaling bay and is now a bathing area next to the fortress. Visit the Chanoca Viewpoint offering a breathtaking view of neighboring São Jorge Island; Cinco Ribeiras, known for its Queijo Vaquinha Cheese Factory and Santa Bárbara village, named for the volcano that marks the highest point of the island. After that, we’ll reach Doze Ribeiras where you’ll see the João de Brito C. Meneses Ethnographic House, a great example of local architecture. In the next village, Serreta, we’ll encounter the Nossa Senhora dos Milagres Sanctuary and Mata da Serreta, a natural Leisure area. Then, we’ll stop at the Raminho Viewpoint, where weather-permitting, you can gaze at the islands of São Jorge, Pico, and Graciosa. We’ll pass through Raminho and Altares villages, before visiting Biscoitos Village to observe the wide vineyard landscape, known for its squared walls surrounded by volcanic rocks. Finally, wade in the waters of the stunning Biscoitos natural swimming pools, enclosed by the sea and volcanic rock formations.  We’ll return to Angra do Heroísmo, through the central area of the island.

Terceira Island Geo Tour

Afternoon pick-up at the hotel for a geological tour of some of the most unique and prominent natural wonders of the Azores. We’ll begin at the center of the island at Patas Lake, a natural lagoon dotted by the many ducks that live there. Then we’ll head to Natal Cave, where you’ll get an inside view of a volcano lava tube, and experience nearby Lagoa do Negro, a lovely ephemeral lake. Continuing our exploration, you’ll visit Sulphur Caverns, a fumarole area surrounded by a splendid view of Mistérios Negros volcanic domas and Santa Bárbara volcano.
